The Positive Reinforcement Training program

Positive reinforcement dog training is a training philosophy and methodology based on the principles of rewarding desired behaviors to encourage their repetition while avoiding punishment for undesirable behaviors.

The core tenet of positive reinforcement is to use positive stimuli, such as treats, praise, or toys, to reinforce behaviors that the trainer wants to see more frequently. This approach is rooted in the understanding that dogs, like all animals, are more likely to repeat behaviors that result in positive outcomes.

Reward-Based Training

Positive reinforcement focuses on rewarding dogs for exhibiting desirable behaviors. This can include commands, tricks, or any behavior that aligns with the owner's expectations. Rewards can take various forms, including treats, verbal praise, physical affection, or the opportunity to engage in a favorite activity.

Emphasis on Good Behavior

Instead of punishing or correcting undesirable behaviors, positive reinforcement places a strong emphasis on identifying and reinforcing good behaviors. By rewarding positive actions, the trainer aims to shape the dog's behavior in a way that is conducive to a harmonious relationship with their human companions.

Timing and Consistency

Effective positive reinforcement relies on precise timing and consistency. The reward must be delivered immediately after the dog exhibits the desired behavior to reinforce the association between the action and the positive outcome. Consistency in applying rewards helps the dog understand the expectations and encourages a faster learning process.

Understanding Canine Motivations

Positive reinforcement trainers invest time in understanding the individual motivations of each dog. Knowing what rewards are most appealing to a specific dog enables the trainer to tailor their approach, making the training experience more engaging and effective.

Building Trust and Confidence

Positive reinforcement fosters a strong bond of trust and cooperation between the dog and the trainer. Dogs learn to associate training sessions with positive experiences, leading to increased confidence and a willingness to engage in the learning process.

Avoidance of Punishment

Unlike punitive training methods, positive reinforcement avoids the use of punishment or aversive techniques. Instead of focusing on what the dog should not do, the emphasis is placed on encouraging and reinforcing the behaviors that are desired. This approach creates a more positive and fear-free training environment.

Problem-Solving through Training

Positive reinforcement is not only about teaching basic commands but also about using training to address and modify undesirable behaviors. Instead of punishing a dog for behaving inappropriately, trainers employ positive reinforcement to redirect and encourage alternative, more desirable behaviors.

Steve Kauffman, IL

“Mike was an expert guide in taming the alpha demeanor of my four-year-old outdoor rescue dog to transform her into a mild-mannered, highrise resident.

Neighbors regularly comment on how calm and well behaved she is in common areas and elevators. Mike's training tips completely stopped her separation anxiety and barking when she was alone in the apartment. "
